Traders in Thyolo could soon have a safer and more organised place to do business after the government officially handed over the construction site for a K15.3 billion modern market project.
The site was handed over to Fidelis Building Contractors through the Trade Programme during a ceremony where government officials urged residents to support the project.
Secretary for Rural Development in the Ministry of Local Government, Unity and Culture, Dingiswayo Jere called on people in Thyolo to support the contractor, saying the project belongs to the district’s residents.
“The market belongs to the people of Thyolo and will benefit traders, farmers and consumers by providing a modern trading environment,” Jere said.
Thyolo District Commissioner Noel Dakamau said the modern market will boost the district’s economy and improve the appearance of Thyolo Boma by providing decent facilities for doing business.

Trade Programme civil engineer Daveson Mandege said the market will comprise 75 shops, 138 market stalls, cold storage facilities for milk, warehouses, a section for selling perishable goods, a police unit, parking space, modern sanitation facilities and infrastructure accessible to people with disabilities.
He said the K15.3 billion project is expected to improve market infrastructure, enhance access to safe trading spaces and stimulate economic growth in Thyolo once completed.
