A nurse at Zomba Central Hospital (ZCH), Monica Meja, has encouraged parents to support their children in pursuing careers of their choice and to enroll them in Community Based Childcare Centres (CBCCs) to lay a strong educational foundation.
Meja made the remarks during a Career Day event organized by Tikondane Positive Living Support Organization (TIPOLISO) at its Star Nursery School in Sadzi Township, Zomba.
The event aimed to help children identify careers they would like to pursue in the future and inspire them to work towards achieving their goals.
Among the careers highlighted by the learners were nursing, medicine, policing, prison services and military service in the Malawi Defence Force.
Speaking as a role model at the event, Meja said CBCCs play a crucial role in a child’s development by helping them learn social skills, adapt easily to primary school and build their intellectual capacity.
She said parents should encourage children who show interest in specific careers at an early age, as such support can help them achieve their dreams.
Meja also urged parents to take an active interest in their children’s education by engaging them on what they learn at school.
“Parents have a responsibility to encourage their children in matters of education because they spend most of their time with them at home,” she said.
TIPOLISO Executive Director Sellina Bomani said the Career Day was designed to motivate children to value education and pursue their career aspirations with confidence.
She further encouraged parents to enroll children in CBCCs between the ages of two and four to expose them to learning at an early stage.
Speaking on behalf of the parents, Falesi Kennedy Kandodo said her child aspires to become a nurse and pledged to provide the necessary support to help her achieve that ambition.
