Man injured while attempting to vandalise ESCOM transformer in Ntchisi

A suspected transformer vandal is fighting for his life after suffering severe injuries while allegedly attempting to tamper with an Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) transformer at Ziyenela Location in Ntchisi District.

The 23-year-old man, who has been identified as Limbikani Banda from Mazengela Village under Traditional Authority Mponela in Dowa District, was reportedly electrocuted during the failed vandalism attempt, leaving him with serious injuries.

Ntchisi Police Station Public Relations Officer Sub-Inspector Salomy Zgambo confirmed the incident.

According to Zgambo, Banda was accompanied by two other men, identified only as Frank and Steven, who are currently on the run. The trio allegedly travelled to Ziyenela Location with the intention of vandalising an ESCOM transformer.

While tampering with the equipment, Banda was electrocuted and suffered burn injuries. He was later rescued and rushed to Ntchisi District Hospital, where he is receiving medical treatment.

Police have since launched a manhunt for the two suspects who remain at large.Meanwhile, police have urged members of the public to desist from vandalising ESCOM infrastructure, warning that such acts are criminal offences punishable by law.

They stressed that anyone found damaging or stealing ESCOM equipment will be arrested and prosecuted.
