eople and businesses could face fresh power disruptions on Sunday after Electricity Generation Company (Malawi) Limited (EGENCO) announced that Tedzani Hydropower Station will go offline.
EGENCO says power generation at the station will be suspended from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. on June 21 to allow for sediment flushing and trash-raking operations, a routine exercise that removes accumulated sand, silt and debris from the plant’s intake system.
The company says the maintenance is aimed at improving the station’s efficiency and ensuring more reliable electricity generation by preventing the build-up of materials that can affect operations.
EGENCO said it will optimise generation from other power stations, including Nkula, Kapichira, Wovwe and diesel-powered plants, to minimise the impact on electricity supply during the seven-hour operation.
The company also apologised for any inconvenience that may arise from the temporary suspension of generation at Tedzani.
Tedzani is one of the country’s major hydropower stations, and periodic sediment flushing is carried out to maintain the performance of its equipment and ensure efficient power production.
