After fleeing growing anti-foreigner attacks and a crackdown on undocumented migrants in South Africa, 980 Malawians are expected back home today.

These Malawians who were at the Lindela Holding Facility in Gauteng Province, travelled in 14 buses dispatched by South Africa’s Department of Home Affairs and are expected to enter Malawi through Mwanza Border Post.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation said it is working closely with South African authorities and Malawi’s diplomatic missions in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Mozambique to ensure the safe return of all affected citizens.

Government also reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the welfare and interests of Malawians living abroad and said it will continue providing updates on the repatriation process.

A total of 171 Malawians who suffered attacks and harsh treatment in South Africa have arrived back home on Monday under the Malawi Government’s repatriation programme.

The returnees were assisted through coordinated efforts between Malawian diplomatic missions and South African authorities to ensure their safe and orderly return.

Government says the exercise is part of ongoing efforts to protect Malawians abroad and respond to cases of violence and insecurity affecting migrants.
