Nkhoma puts player understanding first in Creck revival mission

Creck Sporting Club’s newly appointed coach Chisomo Nkhoma says her immediate focus will be on listening to players and understanding the challenges behind the team’s poor start to the FDH Bank Premiership season.

Nkhoma has taken over the role following the suspension of head coach Eliya Kananji and his assistants Harry Saidi and Blessings Tembo after a difficult opening run of results in the 2026 campaign.

Rather than rushing into tactical changes, Nkhoma stressed that her first step will be engagement with the squad to identify the root causes of the team’s struggles.

“I will sit down with the players and understand their challenges,” she said.

The 2026 FDH Bank Premiership side has endured a difficult start to the season, with Creck yet to register a win after six matches. They currently sit bottom of the 16-team table with two points, having lost four games.

Club General Secretary Aaron Ntaya said the decision to promote Nkhoma from within was based on her familiarity with the team’s structure and culture.

“We know she is the right person for the job. We did not want to bring in someone from outside because Chisomo understands the culture and identity of Creck Sporting Club,” Ntaya said.

Nkhoma, who also coaches the Creck women’s team and the Malawi Under-17 Girls National Football Team, holds a CAF B coaching licence.

National Football Coaches Association chairperson Aubrey Nankhuni expressed confidence that she would succeed if given time to implement her ideas.

“She is a good coach and if she is given time, she will do well,” he said.

Nkhoma becomes only the second female coach to lead a men’s team in the FDH Bank Premiership, following Karren Chaula, who previously managed Ntopwa in 2022. Her first assignment will be in the Airtel Top 8, as Creck are set to face Mighty Wanderers at Zomba Stadium next week.
