Condom shortage fears grip Mchinji

There are fears that HIV infections and unintended pregnancies could rise in Mchinji as condom supplies face a looming shortage at Mchinji District Hospital.

Hospital official Chataika told journalists that while the facility currently has adequate stocks of condoms and other medical supplies, concerns remain about future availability as supplies continue to be distributed daily.

“It is true that the war has affected us Malawians in our health sector. However, despite these challenges, Mchinji District Hospital currently has enough supplies, including condoms, which we are providing to young people,” said Chataika.

He said the hospital’s existing stock remains sufficient for now but warned that continued distribution could lead to shortages if supply challenges persist.

Meanwhile, Devis Damson, a member of Space for Youth, said Malawi has already experienced difficulties accessing condoms and other sexual and reproductive health (SRH) commodities.

“Malawi has been facing shortages of condoms and other reproductive health supplies. These challenges have been worsened by global conflicts between powerful countries such as Iran and the United States,” Damson said.

According to Damson, developing countries often face supply disruptions during major international conflicts because donor countries and international partners redirect resources and attention towards crisis response efforts.

He said such shifts can leave countries like Malawi struggling to secure essential health commodities, including products used in sexual and reproductive health programmes.

Health experts have previously warned that shortages of condoms and other reproductive health supplies can affect efforts to prevent sexually transmitted infections, unintended pregnancies, and other public health challenges.

The conflict between the United States and Iran began on February 28, 2026, when the United States launched major air strikes against Iran.
