Airtel confirms sponsorship for Zamadolo Top 8 Season 9, hints at prize money hike
As the new football season in Malawi draws near, excitement is mounting for another chapter of intense rivalries and action-packed matches.
Airtel Malawi has confirmed it will continue sponsoring the Zamadolo Top 8 Cup, with promises of enhanced rewards for both clubs and players in Season 9.
This was disclosed at a glamorous gala awards ceremony on Wednesday in Blantyre, where FCB Nyasa Big Bullets and Silver Strikers were crowned Season 8 champions and runners-up, respectively.
The event also recognized outstanding contributions, with sports reporters and individual players receiving awards for exceptional performance.
Speaking at the ceremony, Airtel Managing Director, Aashish Dutt, lauded the excitement, record-breaking crowds, and vibrant energy that have made the Cup one of Malawi’s premier football competitions.
“It has been fantastic, so much of excitement, so much of exuberance. I think all the expectations that I had were fulfilled. The crowd which was never seen in any stadium in the country and that has created history so very proud to be part of it,” said Dutt.
While noting that football aligns perfectly with Airtel’s vision of connecting Malawi digitally and fostering unity and opportunity, Dutt said the company remains committed to the competition and promised even more surprises in the seasons ahead.
“Since the economies are changing, definitely the expectations will change. Everything will change and we won’t be short of surprising the fans, surprising the media. So we are very sure we will surprise you. Let’s wait for the start of season 9,” he added.
The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) President, Fleetwood Haiya, expressed his excitement over Airtel’s continued support of the Zamadolo Top 8 Cup, describing the partnership as a major boost for Malawian football.
“Airtel’s commitment demonstrates confidence in how we have managed the competition professionally, transparently, and with integrity. Their sponsorship ensures stability and growth for the Cup,” he said.
Haiya highlighted the competitive nature of the 2025-2026 season, noting that clubs brought their best performances to challenge for the title. He also emphasized the growing commercial value of the competition.
“The record-breaking revenue from this season’s final, totaling K216 million, shows that the Cup is not just about football, it is also becoming a significant platform for sponsors, partners, and media to engage with fans across the country,” Haiya added.
Looking ahead, Haiya expressed confidence that with Airtel’s continued sponsorship and the integration of the Zamadolo Top 8 awards with other FAM awards, Season 9 will be bigger, more competitive, and more rewarding for players, clubs, and fans.
