Lilongwe City Deputy Mayor Councillor Trizah Silo says bringing essential services closer to communities is accelerating economic activity and expanding access to digital opportunities for more people.
Silo made the remarks during the official opening of Airtel Malawi’s new shop in Area 12, Lilongwe, where she said investments that bring services closer to people help save residents time and transport costs while allowing them to focus on productive activities such as business, education and work.
She said improved access to mobile connectivity, internet services and digital financial solutions is helping communities embrace new economic opportunities, particularly for entrepreneurs, small businesses and young people who increasingly rely on digital platforms.
“Reliable digital connectivity and mobile banking are no longer luxuries; they are the very foundation of a thriving economy. Through strategic partnerships with forward-thinking companies like Airtel Malawi, we are transforming Lilongwe into a truly smart, connected city where local businesses and young entrepreneurs can compete on a global stage,” Silo said.
The Deputy Mayor commended Airtel Malawi for expanding its presence into communities, saying such investments contribute to balanced urban development by ensuring residents access important services closer to where they live while reducing pressure on the city centre.
She added that the opening of new service points creates employment opportunities for customer service staff, sales personnel, security workers, cleaners and technicians, while also supporting surrounding businesses, suppliers and service providers through increased economic activity.
Speaking at the launch, Airtel Malawi Managing Director Aashish Dutt said the new facility reflects the company’s commitment to innovation and making digital services more accessible to Malawians.
“This shop reflects our commitment to innovation and delivering a simpler, faster, and more accessible customer experience. We are bringing digital services closer to the people and enabling more Malawians to participate in the digital economy,” Dutt said.
The Area 12 outlet is the second new Airtel shop opened this year after the Hope Square Complex shop in Mzuzu in May.
Airtel Malawi has also earmarked 42 existing shops for upgrades across the country, with three refurbished shops already launched in Lilongwe and Mzuzu as part of efforts to improve customer experience and expand digital access.
