More than 1,000 people in Rumphi district are expected to benefit from a free health screening campaign targeting eyesight problems, diabetes, and mental health conditions, in an intervention aimed at improving access to early diagnosis and treatment for vulnerable communities.
The campaign, scheduled for May 30 and organised by the Mzuzu-Viphya Lions Club, is expected to assist children living with disabilities, elderly people, and other vulnerable groups who often struggle to access specialised medical services.
Organisers say the initiative is expected to help identify undetected health conditions early, allowing patients to receive timely medical attention and referrals before complications worsen.
Treasurer for the club Pauline Chagonapanja-Drennon said the campaign will directly uplift communities where access to healthcare services remains limited.
Meanwhile, the Malawi Gaming and Lotteries Authority has donated K7.8 million towards the initiative as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility programme.
MAGLA Director of Finance and Administration Dumbo Muwalo said the Authority was impressed by the club’s humanitarian work and commitment to addressing health and social challenges affecting communities.
“We were particularly encouraged by the club’s focus on addressing critical health and social challenges affecting communities. We believe that this intervention will benefit the vulnerable members of our society,” said Muwalo.
He further said partnerships between organisations are important in building healthier and more resilient communities.
Commenting on the support, Chagonapanja-Drennon said that through this donation by MAGLA, they will be able to touch lives, and uplift communities where help is needed the most. “The financial donation received will be utilised responsibly, transparently, and strictly for the intended purposes,” said Drennon.
She added that the outreach programme is expected to ease the burden on families affected by untreated illnesses, particularly among elderly people and children living with disabilities.
