Mutharika listens to concerns

Mutharika responds to Malawi Catholic concerns

President Peter Mutharika’s administration says it has taken note of concerns raised by the Catholic Church in Malawi on governance, the economy, security and public service appointments.

The response follows a statement by the Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace (CCJP), which highlighted concerns over the politicisation of public appointments, persistent foreign exchange shortages, the circulation of substandard medicines and delays in the justice system.

The commission also expressed concern over crimes linked to witchcraft accusations and attacks on people with albinism, as well as what it described as a lack of transparency in some high-profile abduction and murder investigations.

CCJP called on government to strengthen merit-based recruitment, intensify the fight against illegal foreign exchange trading, improve regulation of medicines and enhance communication on security matters.

Responding to the statement, Minister of Information and Communications Technology Shadric Namalomba said President Peter Mutharika had taken note of the concerns and appreciated the commission for recognising government’s achievements while also drawing attention to areas requiring further attention.

“The President has taken note of these concerns,” said Namalomba, insisting that Mutharika remains committed to addressing challenges affecting Malawians and welcomed constructive engagement from stakeholders as part of efforts to improve service delivery and national development.
