Malawi First has called for urgent investigations at the Reserve Bank of Malawi, alleging that senior officials are attempting to interfere with an ongoing forensic audit linked to the Pension Fund.

Speaking during a media briefing in Lilongwe, Malawi First leader Bon Kalindo said the organization is alarmed by what it described as efforts to sabotage the audit process. “We are aware of senior officials who are leaking confidential documents to discredit the Pension Funds Board and divert attention from the forensic audit,” Kalindo said.

He alleged that the Pension Fund operated without a board for a certain period, a governance lapse that triggered concerns of possible misappropriation of funds and led to the commissioning of the forensic audit.

Kalindo further claimed that some officials at the central bank are allegedly working in collaboration with a suspended senior Pension Fund official who is also under investigation, raising fears of interference in the audit process.

“If they have nothing to hide, why leak sensitive documents?” he asked, describing the alleged actions as a serious breach of trust that could undermine confidence in the country’s financial institutions.

Malawi First is demanding that the forensic audit be completed without interference and that its findings be made public, while also calling for the immediate suspension of two unnamed senior officials pending investigations.

The organization has also urged the Anti-Corruption Bureau to swiftly institute investigations, warning that failure to act decisively could erode public trust in financial governance systems.
