Karonga District Director of Health Services, David Sibale, says the completion of the oxygen gas plant will significantly improve oxygen supply at Karonga District Hospital and in surrounding districts.
Sibale made the remarks on Thursday in Karonga District after touring the facility alongside officials from the Ministry of Health.
He said the plant is a vital development, noting that once completed, the hospital will no longer need to transport oxygen from other areas, a move that will reduce operational costs and allow resources to be redirected to other essential health services.
“After completion, we will no longer travel to other places to collect oxygen gas, thereby saving costs. The facility will also support neighbouring districts such as Chitipa and Rumphi,” Sibale said.
Sibale added that the oxygen system has been designed to supply the entire hospital through an installed pipeline network, ensuring a steady and reliable oxygen supply throughout Karonga District Hospital.
The oxygen plant project commenced in January 2025 and is being implemented with financial support of approximately K3.3 billion from KfW, the German Development Bank. The project is expected to be completed soon.
