A local watchdog, the Centre for Social Accountability and Transparency (CSAT), is up in arms over a pricey leadership training programme in South Africa, questioning why taxpayer money was spent on overseas travel when local options were available.
The programme, which saw Parliament’s top brass jet off to Sandton, has raised eyebrows given the government’s push for austerity measures.
CSAT’s Willy Kambwandira argues the decision was reckless, pointing out that Malawi has capable training facilities that could’ve hosted the event at a fraction of the cost.
But Parliament’s spokesperson, Ian Mwenye, isn’t having any of it, labeling the criticism as baseless speculation.
According to the Speaker of Parliament, Sameer Suleman, the training was necessary to beef up leadership skills and governance principles within Parliament.
The controversy highlights the ongoing struggle to balance governance priorities with financial responsibility in Malawi.
