The Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) has issued a fresh reminder to broadcasters and online content providers to strictly uphold professional, ethical, and legal standards in news and programme production.

Acting Director General Mayamiko Nkoloma said the obligations are clearly outlined in the Communications Act of 2016 and reinforced by established media ethics, noting that broadcasters are required to ensure news is handled professionally at all times.

MACRA stressed that all news content must be truthful, accurate, and objective, presented in proper context and handled in a balanced manner without deliberate or careless distortion of facts.

The Authority cautioned that information based on opinion, speculation, rumour, or allegation must be clearly identified as unverified, warning that misinformation can spread rapidly, particularly through digital and social media platforms.

Broadcasters were also reminded of their duty to fairly handle controversial issues of public importance by making reasonable efforts to present diverse viewpoints, either within the same programme or in a follow-up broadcast within a reasonable timeframe.

MACRA urged content licensees to verify information with relevant authorities before publication or broadcast, emphasizing the need for consistent fairness, balance, and accuracy in line with the law.

The regulator reaffirmed its commitment to engaging broadcasters and supporting responsible journalism that promotes informed public debate and serves the public interest.
