Malawi will officially launch its 2025/2026 National Forestry Season on January 16 in Phalombe, to plant four million trees to strengthen community resilience and address environmental challenges.
Minister of Natural Resources Alfred Gangata announced the campaign on Wednesday in Lilongwe.
The season, running from December 15, 2025, to April 15, 2026, will focus on tree planting, forest conservation, and sustainable forest management across the country.
According to Gangata, authorities plan to distribute more than 40 million tree seedlings nationwide and manage 4,000 hectares of natural forest regrowth.
“The official launch will take place at Mpata Primary School in Phalombe District, led by Second Vice President Enock Kamzingeni Chihana,” Gangata said.
He added that trees are vital for food, medicine, income, and climate adaptation, especially as Malawi contends with recurring floods, heavy rains, and wind damage to homes and infrastructure.
Gangata urged citizens, civil society, development partners, and the private sector to join the tree-planting efforts and protect Malawi’s forests to ensure a more resilient future.
