Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Ben Phiri, has expressed concern over poor revenue collection in Lilongwe City, ordering councillors and senior council officials to urgently review the city’s revenue enhancement plan.

The capital city is “malnourished” in terms of development, a situation Phiri attributed to weak vision from both the political leadership and the council secretariat.

Phiri stressed that improved revenue mobilisation is critical for Lilongwe to meet its development needs and status as the country’s capital.

The Minister made the remarks during a meeting with Lilongwe City councillors and directors, where the city’s development vision for the 2025/2026 fiscal year was expected to be presented.

Lilongwe City Mayor, Alex Peter Banda, and Chief Executive Officer Macloud Kamam’ manja, were also present at the meeting.

During the meeting, Lilongwe City Council was expected to assess the implementation and effectiveness of its revenue enhancement strategies.

The city’s poor revenue collection has raised concerns about its ability to fund development projects and provide essential services to its residents.

Phiri’s intervention highlights the need for effective leadership and strategic planning to address Lilongwe’s revenue challenges.

The outcome of the meeting is expected to shape the city’s development trajectory and address the pressing issue of revenue mobilisation.
