President Peter Mutharika has assented to a number of bills passed during the recent parliamentary sitting, marking a significant development in the country’s legislative process.

The approved bills include the Taxation Amendment Bill and the Value Added Tax Amendment Bill, which raise the VAT levy from 16.5% to 17.5%, a move that will impact consumers and businesses alike.

A gazette published yesterday confirms the development, making the newly enacted laws operational and setting the stage for implementation.

Mutharika has also given his nod to two loan authorisation bills, allowing the Minister of Finance to borrow €38 million, about K77 billion, for the second phase of the M1 road rehabilitation project, a critical infrastructure upgrade.

The other approved loan is $27 million, equivalent to K47 billion, earmarked for the Jenda Water Supply and Sanitation Project, aimed at improving access to clean water and sanitation services.

The President has further assented to adjustments made to the 2025/2026 national budget, which has been increased from K8.076 trillion to K8.589 trillion, reflecting shifting priorities and needs.

These developments signal a busy end to the year for Malawi’s government, with implications for the economy, infrastructure, and public services.
