An investigation by Malawi24 has established that reports of luggage belonging to Malawi President Peter Mutharika vanishing as the president flew to Malta for the Commonwealth Heads of State and Government meeting were just cooked up by government and ruling DPP propagandists.

Our investigation shows that the claims had were fabricated to buy public sympathy so government can continue chartering Mutharika a private jet which could see billions of public funds go down the drain.

Zobanduka! Not new to using ‘commercial’

The President’s aide on economic affairs, Mr. Collins Magalasi, confirmed in an interview with one local paper that no baggage disappeared. He said all luggage arrived in Malta.

So far, commentators have accused Mutharika and the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) of running what has been referred to as “a senseless propaganda” intended to fool the public into backing DPP’s plans for government to procure a presidential jet.

“Dont worry Malawians, this whole thing was well planned by govt operatives just to buy sympathy from malawians. Is it wrong to ask the wherebout of his personal assistant. Ben phiri shud hav taken care of his boss’s luggage” Synet Chawinga commented.

While others called on Mutharika to resign if he was embarrassed to fly commercial.

“If this is embarrassing he should resign and join private sector where money is as he already told all public servants” wrote Francis Wadi

When reports surfaced that DPP was putting government under stern pressure to buy a presidential jet leading to mounting public pressure to reverse the order, a seemingly arrogant Mutharika had maintained that having a presidential jet would signify the respect needed for his office. He nonetheless gave in to demands by opting to fly commercial as government was criticised for extravagance.
