President Arthur Peter Mutharika has expressed sadness over the death of Sub Traditional Authority Chimatiro of Balaka District, who died in a road accident on May 27, 2026.
Director of Administration in the Ministry of Local Government Timpuza Mwansambo disclosed the message of condolence during funeral proceedings, describing the late chief as a dedicated traditional leader who served his community faithfully for many years.
Mwansambo urged people in the area to remain united and peaceful during the succession process, saying cultural procedures should be respected when selecting the next chief.
He said the late Chimatiro contributed significantly to the development and stability of the area through his leadership.
In his eulogy, Paramount Chief Kawinga also called for togetherness among people in Balaka, stressing the importance of following cultural traditions during the transition period.
He further advised chiefs in the district to remain humble as they serve people from different backgrounds in their communities.
Sub Traditional Authority Chimatiro died in the afternoon of May 27 following a road accident at Kalambo while travelling to Liwonde.
He began serving as Group Village Head in 1984 before being elevated to Sub Traditional Authority Chimatiro in 2022. He has been laid to rest on Friday at his headquarters.
