Malangalanga could soon look very different, with property owners giving a major boost to a plan that promises to reshape one of Lilongwe’s established neighbourhoods.
The property owners have now unanimously endorsed the Malawi Housing Corporation’s (MHC) redevelopment plan, giving the ambitious project a crucial green light as the corporation moves towards transforming the area’s ageing staff quarters.
The endorsement followed a stakeholder meeting held earlier this week at Simama Hotel in Lilongwe, bringing together affected property owners, local civic leaders, the area’s Member of Parliament and ward councillors.
According to MHC, the current dilapidated quarters will be replaced with modern, safe and affordable housing under the proposed redevelopment.
The project will also see infrastructure upgrades across Area 1, including improved road networks, modern drainage systems, street lighting and dedicated green spaces.
MHC says the redevelopment is expected to create local employment opportunities during construction and through the long-term maintenance of the new facilities.
However, property owners want the process to move quickly, particularly the valuation of their properties.
They have asked MHC to conduct the valuations without delay so they can weigh their options between cash compensation and house-swap arrangements.
MHC Chief Executive Officer Bob Chimkango described the community’s backing as a decisive step forward for the project.
“The unanimous backing from the Malangalanga property owners marks a pivotal milestone for this initiative,” Chimkango said.
He said the project represents a transformative shift in MHC’s housing strategy, adding that the corporation remains committed to implementing it with transparency, accountability and speed.
Chimkango said MHC also intends to use the Lilongwe project as a model for future housing developments across the country.
“The Corporation envisions the Malangalanga redevelopment as a benchmark for modern urban renewal initiatives to be replicated across the country,” he said.
As the statutory property landlord under the Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development, MHC will lead the implementation of the redevelopment project.
