Machinga Police have arrested two men in connection with the robbery of a taxi motorcycle, commonly known as Kabaza, at Chimwayi Football Ground in Machinga District.
The suspects have been identified as Daudi Jafali, 38, of Nsomba Village, Traditional Authority Nyambi in Machinga, and Madalitso Ofatsa Pangani, 40, of Salimu Village, Traditional Authority Chikowi in Zomba District.
According to police, the victim, identified as Sankho Dinesi, 20, of Nkalo Village, Traditional Authority Nkula in Machinga, is a Kabaza operator based at Fakili Trading Centre.Police say Dinesi was approached by Jafali, who told him that he had two bags of maize at Chimwayi Village and wanted them transported.
Upon reaching Chimwayi Football Ground, Dinesi reportedly found Pangani, who pretended to be a stranger seeking directions to Malosa Trading Centre.
As the victim slowed down to attend to him, police say Jafali attacked him and attempted to strangle him with a rope.
While struggling to escape, Pangani allegedly produced a panga knife and struck the victim at the back of his head.Dinesi managed to run away while shouting for help, but the two suspects allegedly took his blue Euro motorcycle, valued at approximately K2 million.
The victim was later taken to St. Luke’s Hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment.
His condition is reported to be fair.Police have since arrested the two suspects and recovered the stolen motorcycle.The suspects are expected to appear in court soon after police complete the necessary paperwork.
Meanwhile, Machinga Police Station has advised Kabaza operators to exercise caution, particularly when dealing with unknown passengers during evening and night hours, to avoid falling victim to similar robberies.
