Minister of Mining, Thoko Tembo, has described Portland Cement Malawi Limited’s K200 billion investment in Balaka District as a major boost to Malawi’s industrialisation drive, saying the project is strengthening local manufacturing, creating jobs, and accelerating economic growth.
Speaking on Monday after touring the company’s Balaka cement manufacturing plant and mining operations, Tembo commended Portland Cement Malawi Limited for making one of the country’s largest private sector investments in the manufacturing and mining industries.
The Minister said the investment demonstrates growing confidence in Malawi’s economy and aligns with the government’s vision of promoting value addition, responsible mining, and increased local production.
He noted that the Balaka Plant has become a significant milestone in the country’s efforts to reduce reliance on imported cement while expanding domestic manufacturing capacity to meet the growing demand for construction materials.
Tembo said the investment is already generating employment opportunities for Malawians, stimulating economic activity in Balaka District and surrounding areas, and contributing to sustainable national development.
He further praised the company for embracing responsible mining practices and operating in line with the government’s commitment to developing a modern, competitive, and environmentally sustainable mining sector.
Portland Cement Malawi Limited Chief Executive Officer, Liu Jianguo, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to producing high-quality cement that meets both national and international standards.
Liu said the company remains focused on maintaining strict quality control systems while ensuring full compliance with all regulatory requirements governing its manufacturing and mining operations.
He added that Portland Cement Malawi Limited will continue investing in modern technology, innovation, and operational excellence to support Malawi’s increasing demand for quality cement products and contribute to the country’s socio-economic development.
Portland Cement Malawi Limited’s K200 billion investment is regarded as one of the largest in Malawi’s cement industry and is expected to significantly strengthen the country’s manufacturing capacity, create more employment opportunities, and support infrastructure development across the nation.
