The Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) has urged journalists to take an active role in educating the public on newly introduced tax measures, stating that the media plays a critical role in helping citizens understand tax policies and their obligations.

Speaking on Monday during a training workshop for members of the Nyika Media Club (NMC) in Mzuzu, MRA Corporate Affairs Manager Wilma Chalulu said journalists are important partners in tax administration because of their ability to simplify complex tax issues for the public.

Chalulu said the media can help improve voluntary tax compliance by providing clear and accurate information on recent tax reforms.

“The media is a key partner in tax administration because journalists have the ability to explain complex tax issues in a way that ordinary Malawians can easily understand. We therefore expect you to help raise awareness and promote voluntary tax compliance,” she said.

She highlighted the introduction of the Electronic Invoicing System (EIS) as one of the reforms that require greater public understanding to ensure successful implementation.

According to Chalulu, taxpayers who understand the purpose of taxes and how new measures operate are more likely to comply with their obligations.

Nyika Media Club President Feston Malekezo welcomed the training, describing it as timely and valuable in strengthening journalists’ knowledge of taxation issues.

“This training has enhanced our understanding of the new tax measures. As journalists, we are now better positioned to provide the public with accurate, balanced, and informative reports that will improve tax awareness,” said Malekezo.

He added that journalists have a responsibility to bridge the information gap between MRA and taxpayers by ensuring tax-related information is communicated clearly and accurately.

The workshop is part of MRA’s ongoing efforts to strengthen collaboration with the media in promoting transparency, effective communication of tax policies, and increased taxpayer compliance.

Participants received training on several tax-related issues, including Rental Income Tax, the Mobile Money Transfer Levy, the Motor Vehicle Insurance Levy, and the Electronic Invoicing System (EIS).
