It is not only the medical fraternity mourning the death of Dr. Favour Atughanile Chomo, the Malawi Government has also condemned the brutal killing, describing it as a tragic loss that demands justice.
The Ministry of Gender said Dr. Chomo’s death is a great loss to her family, the medical fraternity and the nation, given her contribution to healthcare.
In a statement, the Ministry also said the killing undermines ongoing efforts to promote girls’ education and empower women and girls across the country.
“The killing of our female doctor is a serious setback to the efforts being undertaken by the Ministry and other stakeholders in promoting girls’ education and empowering women and girls. Women and girls need to see successful professionals such as Dr. Chomo as role models,” the statement reads.
The Malawi Police Service has been commended for the swift response and the arrest of Mr. Macmillan Mvevula in connection with Dr. Chomo’s death.
It has since called on law enforcement agencies to conclude investigations expediently and ensure that justice is served.
“Should the suspect be found guilty, the Ministry calls for the maximum penalty provided under the laws of Malawi,” the statement adds.
The Ministry stressed that violence against women and girls, and violence in any form, has no place in Malawi.
