We are coming for you, police warn HRDC

The Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) may have to think twice before carrying out its planned blockade of the Karonga-Chiweta stretch of the M1 road, after police fired warning shots.

The Malawi Police Service (MPS) says it is ready to keep the road open and has vowed to arrest anyone who attempts to disrupt the free movement of people, goods and services on July 1.

The warning follows HRDC’s announcement that it plans to block the Karonga-Chiweta road to pressure the government into speeding up rehabilitation of the damaged section, which has become a major concern for motorists and businesses.

But police say the protest must not come at the expense of innocent road users.

In a statement, MPS spokesperson Senior Superintendent Lael Chimtembo said the Karonga-Chiweta stretch will remain open and accessible to all motorists despite the planned demonstrations.

Chimtembo warned that any individual or group found blocking the road or engaging in acts that disturb public order on or after July 1 will be dealt with in accordance with the law.

“The Service emphasises that no individual or organisation has the authority to block a public road or hinder the free movement of people, goods and services,” Chimtembo said.

She further urged members of the public to continue using the road without fear, saying police officers will ensure safety and maintain normal traffic flow.

The Malawi Police Service says it remains committed to protecting citizens’ rights while safeguarding public safety and maintaining peace, security and law and order across the country.
