…opportunity knocked, and Blue Eagles answered.

Week 7 of the FDH Bank Premiership produced another significant shift in an increasingly unpredictable title race as the police side capitalised on dropped points by their closest rivals to climb to the top of the table.

Elsewhere, FCB Nyasa Big Bullets ended a three-match run of draws to maintain their unbeaten start, while Ernest Mtawali’s reign at CRECK Sporting Club began with a statement victory.

With no side yet able to establish clear control, the latest round reinforced the growing sense that this season’s championship battle could be one of the most fiercely contested in recent memory.

The weekend began with reigning champions Mighty Wanderers and Silver Strikers presented with an opportunity to strengthen their positions at the summit. Instead, both were left ruing missed chances.

At Mpira Stadium, Wanderers needed a stoppage-time equaliser from Promise Kamwendo to rescue a 1-1 draw against Ekhaya FC after Blessings Malinda had stunned the hosts with a goal deep into first-half added time. While the result preserved Wanderers’ unbeaten momentum, it felt like two points dropped in a race where every advantage matters.

Silver Strikers were equally frustrated at Civo Stadium, where they settled for a 1-1 draw against Civil Service United. Righteous Banda put the hosts ahead before Charles Chipala restored parity for the bankers, who failed to take full advantage of Wanderers’ slip.

Those results opened the door for Blue Eagles.

The police side seized the moment with a thrilling 3-2 victory over Karonga United at Nankhaka Stadium. Webster Mzunda starred with a goal and an assist as Blue Eagles established control through him and Enock Jobo. Karonga responded through Lennox Kiwambe and Elias Muywanga, but Bernet Konyo’s decisive strike early in the second half secured maximum points and sent the Eagles to the summit on 16 points.

While Blue Eagles grabbed the headlines, FCB Nyasa Big Bullets quietly regained momentum.

Having drawn their previous three league matches, the People’s Team risked losing further ground on the frontrunners before edging Kamuzu Barracks 2-1. Ephraim Kondowe handed Bullets an early lead before Olson Kanjira levelled in the second half. However, a late own goal proved decisive, ending Bullets’ frustrating run of draws and keeping them firmly within striking distance of the top three.

The most convincing victory of the weekend belonged to MAFCO FC, who swept aside GC Dedza Dynamos 3-0 at Chitowe Stadium. Zikani Sichinga opened the scoring before Blessings Mofolo struck twice late on to complete a dominant display. The result strengthened MAFCO’s growing momentum while compounding Dedza’s struggles near the foot of the table.

Elsewhere, Moyale FC continued their impressive campaign with a 2-0 victory over LUANAR Mitundu FC through goals from Brown Maganga and Lucky Mkandawire. Red Lions also collected valuable points after Mphatso Mageleta’s second-half penalty secured a narrow 1-0 win against Chitipa United.

One of the weekend’s most intriguing stories unfolded under the floodlights at Bingu National Stadium, where Ernest Mtawali enjoyed a dream start to life as CRECK Sporting Club head coach.

After six matches without a win, CRECK produced one of their most accomplished performances of the season to defeat Masters FC 3-1 away from home.

Ramadan Mtafu opened the scoring before an own goal from Miracle Gabeya doubled the visitors’ advantage. Harvey Nasiyaya added a third before Patrick Phiri grabbed a late consolation for Masters.

Beyond ending their winless run, the victory offered renewed hope that CRECK’s season may finally be heading in a positive direction.

After seven rounds, Blue Eagles lead the standings on 16 points, two ahead of Mighty Wanderers and Silver Strikers on 14. FCB Nyasa Big Bullets occupy fourth place on 13 points, while Red Lions and Masters FC sit on 12.

Ekhaya FC and Moyale FC remain firmly in contention on 11 points, highlighting the congestion in the upper half of the table.

At the other end, GC Dedza Dynamos and Kamuzu Barracks remain rooted on four points, with both sides already facing mounting pressure in the early stages of the relegation battle.

Seven weeks into the campaign, the FDH Bank Premiership remains wide open. Blue Eagles may have seized the initiative, but with only five points separating the top seven teams and momentum shifting almost weekly, the race for the title is only beginning to gather pace.
