Minister of Local Government and Rural Development Ben Phiri has urged Malawians to change their attitudes towards development, saying a shift in mindset is critical for the country to achieve its long-term aspirations.

Speaking in Lilongwe during the launch of the Lilongwe City Mayor’s development vision, Phiri said meaningful national progress depends not only on resources but also on how citizens perceive and support development initiatives.

He stressed that changing attitudes is essential for the successful implementation of Malawi 2063, the country’s long-term development blueprint.

Phiri said the government has already demonstrated its commitment to development through increased funding to district councils under the Constituency Development Fund (CDF).

He noted that President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika has prioritised development projects across the country by allocating substantial resources to local authorities.

Lilongwe City Council Chief Executive Officer Clement Stambuli said the mayor’s vision was designed to improve the lives of all residents in the capital city.

Stambuli called for cooperation between the council and the public, saying the planned projects would require collective effort to succeed.

The vision outlines several priorities, including maintaining a clean city, constructing modern infrastructure, introducing electric buses, installing toll gates and strengthening security.

It also proposes the establishment of a metropolitan police service to enhance safety and security within Lilongwe.

Authorities say the success of the vision will depend on effective implementation and support from residents and other stakeholders.
