Football supporters in Salima who once travelled to Lilongwe and other areas to watch live matches will soon have a home ground as a new stadium nears completion, with government officials pushing for its early opening.

Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Local Government, Unity and Culture, Reverend Moses Chimphepo, made the remarks on Wednesday during an inspection of the stadium alongside officials from various government departments to assess progress on the project.

Chimphepo said he was satisfied with the pace of construction, noting that significant progress had already been made with several key installations completed at the facility.

“The project is moving in the right direction following the installation of several important facilities,” he said.

He further urged the Salima District Council to expedite the installation of the remaining equipment and infrastructure so that sporting activities can begin without further delay.

Salima District Commissioner Thokozile Munthali Chingeni said the project is benefiting from funding under the Constituency Development Fund (CDF), which she said had helped accelerate construction works.

Chingeni added that the council was working to ensure the stadium becomes operational soon, saying the facility would allow residents to watch sporting events locally while also generating revenue for development projects.

The stadium project was initially launched under the Governance to Enable Service Delivery (GESD) programme before receiving additional support through the CDF.

Once completed, the facility is expected to boost sports development in Salima and provide a modern venue for both community and competitive football events.
