FAM cracks whip on SULOM

A bitter football power struggle is heading to the disciplinary table after one decision left a match abandoned, fans stranded and police firing tear gas at Kamuzu Stadium.

The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has charged the Super League of Malawi (SULOM) with five disciplinary offences, accusing the league body of deliberately ignoring a stadium safety directive that barred matches at Kamuzu Stadium.

According to FAM, SULOM went ahead and arranged a fixture despite the April 23 directive, creating a standoff that ultimately forced the match to be called off after supporters had already entered the stadium.

The cancellation sparked anger among fans, with the situation escalating into disorder that prompted police to use tear gas to disperse the crowd.

In a June 12, 2026 letter addressed to SULOM Chief Executive Officer Faith Mzungu, FAM Chief Executive Officer Abdul Chiwalo outlined five charges against the league body.

The charges include failure to support FAM’s authority and prevent statutory violations, non-compliance with FAM statutes and safety directives, failure to protect match integrity and competition standards, willful and deliberate disregard of lawful FAM directives, and conduct that brings football into disrepute by undermining FAM’s governance structures.

“SULOM defied the directive and proceeded to schedule a match,” FAM states in the charge particulars.

The matter will be heard by FAM’s Disciplinary Committee on Saturday, June 20, at Nkopola Lodge in Mangochi.

Meanwhile, SULOM General Secretary Williams Banda has confirmed receiving the notice, saying the league body will appear before the committee to answer the charges.
