Disturbing Facebook videos allegedly showing children as young as four smoking and drinking have shocked Malawians and triggered calls for an urgent police investigation.
The clips have spread rapidly across social media, with many users demanding action to protect the children which are believed might be of the age 4 to 6 and hold those behind the videos accountable
Malawian musician Waxy Kay has joined the growing outrage, urging the Malawi Police Service to investigate the videos and identify those responsible.
In a post on his official Facebook page, Waxy Kay said the children appear to be between four and six years old and questioned why they were being used to promote smoking and alcohol consumption.
He said remaining silent and failing to speak out when witnessing such acts means one does not have love.
“I am asking the Malawi Police Service to find the person who is making these videos with the children. This person must be investigated because they are destroying the future of our kids,” he wrote.
The artist, who has spoken openly about his own past with drugs and alcohol, warned that such content teaches children to become criminals, drunkards, and smokers.
He urged content creators to consider the impact before chasing views online.
He added that his second chance at life came through the Grace of God and he cannot waste it by ignoring harm to children.
However, Waxy praised police for a recent intervention with a young girl who made “makilinyombe” videos about ‘blessers’.
He said officers called the girl and her manager, gave them advice, and she is now back in school.
