MANEPO urges action on elder abuse

Elderly abuse

The Malawi Network of Older Person’s Organisations (MANEPO) has called on government to fully implement and resource the Older Persons Act to end abuse and protect older citizens.

MANEPO’s call comes as Malawi has joined the global community in commemorating the 2026 World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.

MANEPO Executive Director Andrew Kavala said in a statement that dignity in old age cannot coexist with violence, abandonment, property deprivation, social exclusion, or witchcraft accusations targeting older persons.

“These acts are not merely social injustices; they constitute serious violations of the rights to life, dignity, equality, security, and freedom from discrimination,” reads part of the statement.

The network warned that failing to hold perpetrators accountable leaves violations against older persons unchecked.

MANEPO has therefore urged government to strengthen social protection measures and ensure perpetrators are investigated, prosecuted, and held accountable.

It has also called on traditional leaders, faith leaders, families, and communities to challenge harmful beliefs that expose older persons to violence and exclusion.
