Four former Ministry of Lands officials have been found guilty of abuse of office in a scam involving the illegal sale of a plot of land that belonged to someone else in Mzuzu.

The Mzuzu Resident Magistrate Court convicted Khwima Mkandawire, Adiel Tsambewe, Richard Sumaili, and Chisomo Chawanje on June 3, 2026, for violating Section 25B (1) of the Corrupt Practices Act.

The four officials were arrested in 2021 after allegedly selling a plot in Area 4, Mzuzu, for K1.8 million, despite it already having an owner.

At the time of their arrest, Mkandawire was an Assistant Estate Officer, Tsambewe an Assistant Surveyor, Sumaili an Assistant Estate Management Officer, and Chawanje an Estate Management Assistant.

The court has set June 15, 2026, for sentencing.

The ACB emphasized its commitment to holding public officers accountable for misuse of their positions, as part of its effort to maintain public confidence in the management of resources and service delivery.
