Malamulo Mission Hospital set for reliable power upgrade to improve patient care

Enhanced power supply at Malamulo Mission Hospital for better patient care.

A major breakthrough in healthcare delivery is on the horizon for communities served by Malamulo Mission Hospital in Thyolo, as a new micro-grid power project promises to bring consistent electricity, improved patient care and enhanced operational efficiency at the facility.

For years, the hospital has struggled with frequent power outages, unstable voltage and fuel shortages, challenges that have disrupted critical services and put lives at risk.

The planned micro-grid system is expected to change that, ensuring uninterrupted power supply across all departments and creating a more stable environment for both patients and medical staff.

In a significant step towards making this vision a reality, National Bank of Malawi plc (NBM plc) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Malamulo Mission Hospital, committing K317 million, representing half of the total project cost.

The investment is expected to directly strengthen healthcare delivery by safeguarding sensitive medical equipment from damage caused by power fluctuations, while also enabling life-saving procedures to continue without interruption.

From operating theatres to maternity wards, the impact is likely to be felt across every corner of the hospital. Beyond improving service reliability, the project is also set to lower operational costs by reducing dependence on expensive fuel-powered generators.

This shift will allow the hospital to redirect resources towards essential medical supplies and expanding services, ultimately benefiting the large population it serves. Environmental gains are another key advantage.

The micro-grid system will incorporate sustainable energy solutions, reducing the hospital’s carbon footprint and aligning healthcare delivery with environmentally responsible practices.

Speaking during the signing ceremony, NBM plc Chief Operations Officer Masauko Katsala said the intervention reflects the bank’s broader commitment to uplifting communities and supporting institutions that play a critical role in saving lives.

“We do not view Corporate Social Investment as an obligation; it is a responsibility that defines who we are. This intervention responds directly to the hospital’s needs, recognizing its vital role in saving lives,” said Katsala.

Malamulo Mission Hospital Chief of Surgery, Dr Brent Sherwin welcomed the development, noting that the project will accelerate efforts to complete the power system and bring long-awaited stability to their operations.

“What the National Bank of Malawi has provided is timely and impactful. We needed resources to complete this project, and this contribution enables us to move forward and finalise it,” he said.

Once completed within the next 18 months, the micro-grid is expected to serve an estimated 500,000 people who rely on Malamulo Mission Hospital, including patients from surrounding districts and neighbouring countries
