Red card to rumours: Govt denies Mutharika congratulated Arsenal

Mutharika speaks on good health and well-being during a public event in Malawi.

The Malawi government has denied that President Peter Mutharika issued a congratulatory message to Arsenal Football Club for winning the 2025/2026 English Premier League and warned that using the president’s name without consent is a legal offense.

In a press release seen by this publication, the government said a poster circulating on social media claiming Mutharika had sent congratulations to Arsenal was false malicious disrespectful, and trivialized the presidency.

The government has ordered the author of the poster to delete the president’s name from the list of congratulatory messages.

It further warned the public that using someone’s name let alone the president’s name without consent violates the law.

The statement also said that offenders once identified will face full legal prosecution and may receive substantial fines or imprisonment.

The denial comes after the fake poster spread widely on social media platforms claiming the president had congratulated Arsenal on their league title win.
