The Basketball Association of Malawi has received a timely boost ahead of next month’s national basketball championships in Mzuzu after Malawi-born coach Mphatso Zilemba donated referee uniforms to support the tournament.
BASMAL General Secretary Peter Gomani confirmed that the association received 10 sets of referee jerseys, a contribution expected to ease part of the logistical burden ahead of the highly anticipated competition.
“This is a good gesture and as BASMAL we are very grateful. The donation will greatly assist us in preparing referees for the Nationals in Mzuzu,” Gomani said.
The donation comes as BASMAL intensifies preparations for the national finals, which are expected to attract top basketball teams and officials from across the country.
Beyond the uniforms, Gomani said discussions with Zilemba and his associates in China could pave the way for further assistance, including basketballs, shot clocks, whistles, and other technical equipment aimed at improving the local game.
Zilemba, a former Malawi senior national basketball player who has spent more than a decade coaching in China, said he remains committed to contributing to the growth of basketball in Malawi through grassroots development and technical support for the national teams.
“This is just the beginning. We want to help create better opportunities for the next generation of players and contribute to rebuilding the national teams,” Zilemba said.
