The Salima First Grade Magistrate Court has sentenced a 19-year-old man, Lonjezo Patrick, to 84 months imprisonment with hard labour for allegedly attacking an 11-year-old-girl, who was on her way from school and was sexually assaulted.
According to Salima Police Deputy Public Relations Officer, Constable Veronica Kamphafa, State prosecutor Sub Inspector Winfored Mawindo told the court that on May 5, 2026, at around 2pm in Nakudza Village, the victim was on her way home from school when Patrick allegedly grabbed and sexually assaulted her.
Upon arriving home, the victim narrated the incident to her mother, who later reported the matter to the police.
Medical examinations conducted at Khombedza Health Centre confirmed that penetration had occurred.
Appearing before the court, Patrick pleaded guilty to the charges against him.
In mitigation, Patrick pleaded for leniency, telling the court that he is the family’s breadwinner.
However, state prosecutor Sub Inspector Mawindo urged the court to impose a stiffer sentence, arguing that the victim would suffer lifelong trauma and that the incident could negatively affect her education.
In his ruling, First Grade Magistrate Imran Phiri agreed with the state and sentenced Patrick to 84 months imprisonment with hard labour.
Patrick comes from Nabwanje Village under Traditional Authority Mwanza in Salima District.
