Charles Twalibu, Chairperson of Chiwanja Cha Ayao, has resigned from his position, effective immediately, citing the demands of a new project that requires his full attention.
In a resignation letter dated April 14, 2026, addressed to the Secretary of the Chiefs Council, Twalibu stated that the nature of his new commitments, which involve daily meetings and continuous updates, made it difficult for him to effectively balance both responsibilities.
“The demands of the project made it apparent that I could not effectively handle both roles,” reads part of the letter. “I have decided to step down to ensure that divided attention does not affect the progress of our heritage grouping.”
Twalibu further indicated that the Vice Chairperson will, in line with the organization’s constitution and in consultation with the relevant authorities, oversee the process of identifying his replacement.
He described his tenure as an honour, noting that serving in the top leadership role of the grouping had been a privilege, despite the circumstances leading to his departure.
In an interview with this publication, Chiefs Council Secretary, Senior Chief Chowe, confirmed receiving the resignation letter from Twalibu, indicating that the matter is now before the council for consideration.
However, Senior Chief Chowe said the council is currently engaging Twalibu in discussions aimed at persuading him to reverse his decision, arguing that the reasons he has given are not sufficiently convincing.
“There are others who are also doing business and managing to serve in similar positions,” he said.
He added that if Twalibu maintains his decision to step down, the Vice Chairperson will assume the role in an acting capacity in line with the constitution, with fresh elections to be conducted to fill the position permanently.
Chiwanja Cha Ayao is a cultural body that plays a key role in promoting and preserving Yao traditions and heritage.
Twalibu was elected to the position in May last year after defeating MacDonald Sembereka and Japhal Mussa in a contested race, taking over the role from Mzee Yasin.
