Citizens for Justice and Equity has notified the Lilongwe District Commissioner of plans to hold a peaceful demonstration on Thursday, 7 May 2026, to demand accountability over the alleged assault of a woman by Blantyre City Mayor Jomo Osman.
In a letter seen by this publication, sent to the Lilongwe District Commissioner, Citizens for Justice and Equity said the march seeks to express public concern and promote respect for the rule of law, protection of human dignity, and accountability of public officials.
According to the notification, demonstrators will gather at Lilongwe City Council at 9am before marching to the American Embassy, British High Commission, Norwegian Embassy, Ministry of Local Government, and Ministry of Gender and Community Development.
The organizers emphasized that the demonstration will be conducted peacefully and lawfully, without violence or disruption beyond what is reasonably incidental to such an assembly.
They said they will cooperate with law enforcement and have requested the District Commissioner’s office to coordinate with police to ensure security.
The planned protest follows public outrage after a video circulated online allegedly showing Mayor Osman assaulting a woman.
Osman has since apologized for his actions, while the Malawi Human Rights Commission and other civil society groups have condemned the incident and called for police action.
The District Commissioner’s office had not responded to the notification by time of publication.
