FDH Bank may have frozen K7.58 billion in sponsorship but Super League of Malawi (SULOM) is not flinching. The league goes on.
SULOM has confirmed that FDH Bank Premiership matches will proceed as scheduled today, despite FDH Bank Plc suspending its football sponsorship following Saturday’s chaotic season launch.
The suspension follows a failed season opener at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre, where the much-anticipated match between Mighty Wanderers and Karonga United was abandoned before kickoff.
The match collapsed after referees failed to turn up amid a standoff over the use of the stadium, which had not been approved for the 2026 season. The incident escalated into crowd unrest, forcing police to fire tear gas.
In the aftermath, FDH Bank Plc announced it was suspending all sports-related sponsorships and activities, citing concerns over football governance and the events surrounding the aborted launch.
“The unfortunate impasse between Super League of Malawi (SULOM) and Football Association of Malawi (FAM) undermines the commercial viability of our partnerships and negatively impacts FDH Bank Plc brand image,” the bank said in a statement released on Sunday.
It added that the suspension would remain in place pending a review.
Despite the development, SULOM general secretary Williams Banda said the league would continue as planned, confirming that all fixtures will go ahead.
