Government says Malawi’s economic recovery is on track, but it has yet to reveal the figures that would show whether struggling Malawians are beginning to feel the difference.

Information and Communications Technology Minister Shadric Namalomba says President Peter Mutharika’s administration remains focused on tackling the country’s economic challenges.

In a statement responding to concerns raised by the Church of Central Africa Presbyterian (CCAP), Namalomba said government was prioritising food, fuel, fertiliser and foreign exchange, which it calls the four Fs.

He described the four areas as critical to stabilising the economy, adding that government interventions were aimed at improving the supply of essential goods and restoring economic confidence.

“The recovery trajectory is encouraging, and Government remains committed to sustaining progress,” said Namalomba.

The minister acknowledged the church’s role in national development, saying government welcomed constructive engagement on issues affecting the country.

He also urged the CCAP and Malawians to work with government, arguing that rebuilding the economy required patience, unity and collective effort.

However, the statement did not provide specific figures or outline measures showing how much progress has been made in addressing shortages of essential goods and foreign exchange challenges.

The response leaves questions about how quickly the government’s efforts will translate into tangible relief for Malawians grappling with the country’s economic difficulties.
