Police in Zomba have arrested a 31-year-old man in connection with the murder of a 59-year-old woman whose body was found hidden in a well nearly seven weeks after she went missing.
The suspect, Cassim Dausi, was arrested by officers from the Zomba Criminal Investigation Department (CID) during an intelligence-led operation conducted with the Zomba Special Patrol Team.
Zomba Police Deputy Public Relations Officer Andrew Mwale confirmed the arrest, saying investigations had linked Dausi to the death of Margret Sande of Bula Village, Traditional Authority Chikowi.
Sande went missing on July 4, 2026, and her son reported the matter at Chimwalira Police Unit.
Her whereabouts remained unknown until August 23, when her body was discovered at around 11am inside a well that had been concealed with grass.
Police said the body was wrapped in a chitenje cloth and tied to a stone.
Mwale said Dausi, who was previously Sande’s son-in-law, remains in police custody and is assisting investigators with the inquiry.
He is expected to appear in court once investigations are completed.
Dausi comes from Mbamba Village, Traditional Authority Mlumbe in Zomba District.
Zomba Police have thanked members of the public for providing information that has helped investigators make progress in the case.
Police have also urged communities to continue sharing information that could assist in bringing suspected offenders to justice.
