Barely a year after Malawians kicked him out of Kamuzu Palace, former President Lazarus Chakwera’s family has gone from the glamour of State House to messy heartbreak. What once appeared rock-solid is now falling apart. The centre can no longer hold for the Chakweras as details emerge about what is bringing a high-profile marriage to breaking point.
At the centre of the divorce proceedings is Chakwera’s daughter, Tapiwa Chakwera, who has filed for divorce from her husband Sean Kampondeni.
The matter was scheduled to be heard on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, but proceedings were adjourned after technical and communication challenges reportedly affected the virtual hearing.
Reports indicate that the case is expected to proceed through virtual hearings because one of the parties is currently outside Malawi.
Details surrounding the breakdown of the marriage remain limited, and the reasons behind Tapiwa’s decision to seek divorce have not been publicly disclosed. Unverified claims circulating online have not been independently established by Malawi24. For now,what exactly brought the marriage to breaking point remains largely speculative, with neither party publicly revealing what went wrong.
The development has attracted considerable public interest not only because Tapiwa is daughter of former President Lazarus Chakwera, but also because Kampondeni was a prominent figure in Chakwera’s State House, serving as Director of Communications and Executive Assistant to the President after Chakwera was ushered into office in 2020.
The couple was therefore closely associated with the former First Family and the centre of power throughout Chakwera’s presidency.
Neither Tapiwa nor Kampondeni had issued a public statement regarding the divorce proceedings at the time of publication. Their respective legal representatives had also not publicly commented on the matter.
Court is expected to set a new hearing date, after which proceedings will continue.
