Relief could be on the way for tobacco growers still waiting for money from their sales, with the Tobacco Commission giving them a date to look forward to.
The Tobacco Commission has assured tobacco growers that proceeds withheld from tobacco sold before August 14, 2026, will be paid by August 28.
The Commission says the money was withheld from growers who sold tobacco above their allocated quotas, as part of measures to ensure compliance with licensing requirements for excess volumes.
Tobacco Commission spokesperson Telephorus Chigwenembe told Malawi24 that arrangements were in place to facilitate payment of the withheld proceeds to all affected growers by next Friday.
“We want to assure them that they will get their proceeds by next week,” said Chigwenembe.
The assurance is expected to ease concerns among farmers who have been waiting for payment following the sale of their tobacco.
However, the Commission has not indicated the total amount of money being withheld or the number of growers affected.
