Scorchers goalkeeper Mercy Sikelo has broken her silence after claims about her future with the Malawi national women’s football team started circulating on social media.
The Scorchers shot stopper has dismissed reports circulating on social media claiming that she has quit the Malawi national women’s football team.
The reports emerged after some social media users claimed that Sikelo had decided to stop playing for the Scorchers.
Writing on her Facebook page, Sikelo dismissed the reports, describing them as fake news. “Fake news imeneyo,” she wrote.
Sikelo is among the players who helped the Scorchers make history by finishing as runners-up at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.
Meanwhile, Jomo Osman has criticized those spreading the reports, saying Malawians should not focus on pointing out the goalkeeper’s mistakes but should instead appreciate what the team has achieved at the tournament.
Osman said Malawians should not take the Scorchers’ achievement for granted, arguing that women’s football has often been taken lightly in the country.
He said the team’s historic performance deserves recognition and support as Malawi prepares for its first appearance at the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
The Scorchers are now on their way home after spending 34 days in Morocco for the tournament. They had a remarkable campaign, reaching the final after defeating Algeria 3-1 in the semi-final.
The team’s historic run attracted huge support from Malawians, with fans following their matches and celebrating their victories.
