Two men are in police custody in Lilongwe after police allegedly uncovered a 190-kilogramme consignment of Cannabis Sativa in Area 25.
The arrest has exposed a suspected drug trafficking operation, with police saying the seized cannabis was being kept and sold without the required licence.
The suspects are Shadreck Maganga, 41, from Chipoka Village under Traditional Authority Mwanyenga in Phalombe, and Ben David Mkosi, 36, from Yotamu Ziba Village under Traditional Authority Chindi in Mzimba.
Police arrested the two on Monday during an intelligence-led operation carried out by the Central West Regional Police team and Kanengo detectives.
Kanengo Police Station spokesperson said officers acted on information that some people were keeping and selling illicit drugs in the area.
Acting on the tip, the officers raided a house in Sector 7 where they found the two suspects.
A search of the house uncovered 10 bales and 23 packets of Cannabis Sativa weighing 190 kilogrammes.
The suspects allegedly failed to produce documents authorising them to possess or sell the drugs, leading to their arrest.
During interrogation, Maganga allegedly told police that the Cannabis Sativa originated from Eswatini and was brought into Malawi using refrigerated trucks.
He allegedly further told investigators that the drugs were repackaged into empty fuel tankers after arriving in Malawi before being transported to Tanzania.
Police have charged the two with being found in possession of Cannabis Sativa without a licence.
They are expected to appear in court after completion of the necessary legal processes.
The seized Cannabis Sativa has since been sent to Chitedze Research Station for laboratory analysis.
Kanengo Police have urged members of the public to continue sharing information about suspected illegal activities with law enforcement agencies.
