Zomba Police Station has arrested 27 people for various offences following an intelligence-led security operation conducted in Zomba City and its surrounding areas during Malawi’s Independence Day celebrations.
Zomba Police Deputy Public Relations Officer, Constable Andrew Mwale, confirmed the arrests in an interview with our reporter.
According to Mwale, the suspects were apprehended for a range of offences, including possession of petroleum products without valid permits, conduct likely to cause a breach of peace, touting, gambling, and operating liquor businesses without the required licences.
Among those arrested are Alleken Goliat, 41, Austine Shaibu, 20, Christina Mbambande, 22, and Blessings Mkumba, 16.Mwale said all the suspects remain in police custody and are expected to appear before court after the completion of the necessary legal processes.
Preliminary investigations have established that all the suspects are residents of Zomba District.
Meanwhile, Zomba Police Station has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining law and order and safeguarding the public. The station has also urged community members to continue cooperating with the police by reporting criminal activities and sharing information that can assist in preventing and combating crime.
