Students in Malawi’s public universities have been assured of continued financial support despite the recent increase in tuition fees.

The Higher Education Student’s Loans and Grants Board (HESLGB) says it is working with the Ministry of Education and other stakeholders to cushion the impact of revised tuition fees in public universities.

In a press statement, HESLGB emphasized its commitment to ensuring that financial limitations do not prevent eligible and needy Malawian students from accessing higher education.

The Board noted that this mandate has become even more critical following recent tuition adjustments that have raised affordability concerns among students, parents, and guardians.

To support the effort, government has assured HESLGB, through the Ministry of Education, that additional financial resources will be made available beyond the MK42 billion allocated in the 2026/2027 National Budget.

The Board says the extra funding will enable it to finance all eligible students targeted under the 2026/2027 Student’s Loans and Grants Programme.

An estimated 38,000 beneficiaries across Malawi’s public universities and colleges are expected to benefit from the programme this academic year.

“HESLGB wishes to assure all stakeholders that every effort is being made to ensure that deserving and needy students continue to access financial support in accordance with the established eligibility criteria and provisions of the Higher Education Students’ Loans and Grants Act,” the statement reads.

The Board added that it is currently finalizing administrative and operational processes for the programme, including application assessment, verification, beneficiary selection, and preparations for the timely disbursement of tuition and upkeep support.

HESLGB also urged applicants and the general public to follow official HESLGB communication channels for accurate updates on application, selection and disbursement schedules, and to disregard misinformation circulated on unofficial platforms.
