As Malawi continues to grapple with a severe foreign currency shortage, police in Rumphi have arrested two Tanzanian nationals after allegedly discovering more than US$1.14 million (over K2 billion) hidden in their vehicle during a security operation at the Chiweta Roadblock.
The suspects, identified as Paschal Nyanda, 28, and Sanda Donald, 24, were arrested on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, at around 2:30 p.m. during a special police operation targeting cross-border crimes.
According to police, officers stationed at the Chiweta Roadblock intercepted a Mazda Axela, registration number NE 11400, travelling from Lilongwe to Tanzania and driven by Nyanda.A thorough search of the vehicle allegedly led to the discovery of US$1,141,215 concealed inside the car.
Police said the two suspects failed to produce any documentation authorising their possession or transportation of the large amount of foreign currency. The cash, along with the vehicle, has since been seized as investigations continue.
The suspects are expected to appear before court once police complete the necessary paperwork.
They are likely to face charges of possessing foreign currency without supporting documentation and money laundering.
Police said the arrest underscores ongoing efforts to strengthen border security and crack down on financial crimes, including the illegal movement of large sums of money across Malawi’s borders.
