Civil Servants who depend on government salaries to feed their families, pay rent and meet daily expenses are growing anxious after June salaries failed to arrive on time, with authorities yet to explain the delay.

Some civil servants have expressed frustration, saying the silence from government has only deepened uncertainty as bills continue to pile up.

A Blantyre-based primary school teacher told Malawi24 that the delayed salaries have left many workers unable to pay rent or buy basic household necessities.

“We have families to look after, but without our salaries we cannot even afford food. Landlords are demanding rent, yet we have nothing to give them,” said the teacher.

The frustration has also spilled onto social media, where civil servants and their supporters have been demanding answers from government.

One Facebook user wrote: “Does this government know our landlords koma mutichotsetsa ma rent I beg give Civil Servants their Little Money.”

Meanwhile, reports indicate that while some civil servants in a few districts have already received their June salaries, sources say these districts are very few compared to the majority still waiting for payment.

Despite the growing public concern, government had not issued any official communication on the delayed salaries by the time of publication.

However, another source told us that rumours are indicating that the remain civil servants could receive their June salaries on or before July 6, although the government is yet to officially confirm the claim.
